Landings Recycling Center
A Landings Association Recycling Center (open to all Skidaway Island residents), is located across from the ValleyCrest maintenance shop and kitty corner to Fire Station #5 on McWhorter Road (across from the North Gate). Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Goodwill Industries staffs the Center and has provided a drop-off location for donations as well.
The Recycling Center accepts all types of cardboard (not just corrugated), plastic (numbers 1 - 6), newspaper, magazines, and aluminum. If revenue from these materials exceeds projections, the Center may be able to accommodate other recyclable items in the future, such as bottles.
Please realize that you will need to separate your items, based on the specific bins. Also, please take note of the following regarding those bins:
- Aluminum: Cans should be crushed if possible and placed into the aluminum bin free of any plastic bags. - Cardboard: Boxes should be broken down and placed into the bin. Please do not place any plastic in the bin. All types of cardboard are acceptable, and not just corrugated. - Paper Products: Newspaper, magazines, and white office paper can be placed into the bin loose. Please do not tie up the newspapers or place them in plastic bags. In addition, this bin cannot be used for telephone directories. - Mixed Plastic Bin: This bin will accept plastic types 1-6. Plastic should be crushed and placed in plastic bags for easy handling.
Landings Recycling Center Questions-and-Answers - Following are some of the questions The Landings Association has received about the Recycling Center along McWhorter Road, along with their answers.
Question: Recycling centers usually collect glass in addition to other items acceptable at the new facility. Is there a reason bottles are not being recycled here at The Landings? Answer: The Landings’ Recycling Center is set up to be a cost-neutral program. Currently, the Center does not accept glass because there is no return on this product. The mixed paper products and plastics yield a return of approximately $15 per ton of material collected. This money is then used to cover the costs of renting the bins and hauling the material. The Association hopes to add glass to this facility in the future by using the revenue from the mixed paper products and plastics, after the return on these media is able to support the extra cost of the bin rentals and hauling fees for glass. Meanwhile, other recycling options can be found by clicking the link above.
Question: We were first informed that we could recycle plastic bags at the new Recycling Center and later told we could not. What is the status of recycling plastic bags? Answer: Plastic bags are #2 plastics and able to be recycled in the Plastics recycle bin. All loose bags should be placed in one large bag and secured. Many grocery stores, including Kroger, also have recycling containers for plastic bags near their entryways. In addition, many stores now sell reusable tote bags for a nominal fee, so that you can avoid using the plastic bags altogether.
Question: Can we recycle the slick ads in the Sunday newspaper? Answer: Yes. Slick ads can be placed into the mixed paper products bins, which are located on the back fence of the facility. These bins can accept newspapers, magazines, and office paper.
Question: Can we put brown grocery bags in with the newspapers? Answer: Yes.
Question: Can metal cans other than aluminum be recycled at the Center? Answer: Not at this time. There are two trailers located next to the Goodwill building that collect aluminum cans, with the proceeds benefiting the local Boy Scout Troop and the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Association. Currently, we do not collect tin or steel cans. We hope that will be an item we can collect in the future, as long as other collectibles, such as newspapers, provide enough revenue.
Comment: I was able to get my aluminum cans into the proper containers, but I fear that many of our residents will be unable to hoist their aluminum cans into those containers. Response: Both the Boy Scouts' and South Side Fire Department now have side loading trailers on site to allow for easier access for residents.
Question: Are there newspaper bins still at The Landings Association's office? Answer: No. All collection bins are located at the Recycling Center.
Question: Will there still be curbside pickup of bulk trash by the County on the 2nd Friday of each month? Answer: Yes.
Other Notes To Remember: - Some residents have been dropping off their loads and expecting the Goodwill staffer to distribute the materials into the proper bins. That is not the role of Goodwill. Please, if you have items to take to the Recycling Center, realize that it is up to you to place those items into the proper bins. - Many residents recycling newspapers have placed those newspapers into plastic bags and then put the entire load into the newspaper recycling bin. Please do not place the plastic bags in the newspaper bin. Plastic bags are to be placed in the Plastic bins and are also accepted at all Kroger locations.
