Warning Sirens
Chatham County Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) has remotely controlled sirens on Skidaway Island. A three-to-five minute high-pitched sound from the County sirens signals a hazard alert. Residents should get to a radio or TV immediately to establish the hazard (tornado or hazardous materials, etc.) and appropriate actions. If the warning indicates a tornado, your best shelter would be an interior room (no windows). Remain in your shelter until the storm passes.
The golf courses have a lightning warning system that warns of the potential for lightning in the local area. This system sounds one blast of approximately 15 seconds to warn that lightning is possible in the area. Three 5 second blasts indicates all is clear. When the warning sounds, you should seek shelter inside a building, avoid open water, golf shoes, wire fences, metal equipment, use of the telephone, and other likely targets that can attract lightning.
